CTP stainless steel pumps for aggressive silage effluent
Northern Germany

Meyer, based in Flögeln, specializes in the construction of silage effluent shafts. To withstand the extreme demands of these aggressive media, the company relies on the durable stainless-steel pumps of the HOMA CTP series.

On agricultural farms, large volumes of highly corrosive silage effluent are generated during silage production. This liquid has a pH value between 3.8 and 4.5, which quickly pushes cast iron pumps to their limits and leads to failure. The objective was to provide a long-term resistant pumping solution for these extreme conditions – at an operating point of 12.0 l/s at 12 m head.

Waste water and sewage systems

Project description:
Meyer, based in Flögeln, is a civil engineering company specialized in the construction of silage effluent tanks. Silage effluent is a harmful wastewater that results from silage storage and must not be released into sewers, watercourses, or soil. It must be collected in sealed tanks and treated or reused in appropriate systems such as biogas plants or constructed wetlands. The disposal of this effluent is a particular challenge for farmers and biogas plant operators. Due to the very low pH values and varying solids content, the liquid is highly corrosive. Cast iron pumps are not resistant enough in this environment, leading to high failure rates and maintenance costs. In high effluent concentrations, a cast iron pump may completely corrode and fail in less than a year.

Solution:
The HOMA CTP series is made entirely of high-grade cast stainless steel and equipped with Viton O-rings and wear-resistant Burgmann mechanical seals (SIC/SIC/FPM). If required, motors can also be supplied in explosion-proof design (ATEX). This choice of materials and the solid handling of 50 mm impellers ensure reliable operation even in this demanding medium. The HOMA CTP 50 can be supplied with a coupling foot and guide rail for shaft installation or as a portable version with hose connection. The HOMA HCON15 pump control panel with outdoor cabinet provides convenient operation and reliable control of the entire system.

Special challenges:
• Strongly fluctuating solids content in the medium
• Very low pH values (3.8–4.5), high risk of corrosion
• High requirements for material quality and service life
• Handling large volumes of rain and silage leachate containing solids.
Thanks to the stainless steel pumps of the CTP series, HOMA offers a long-term, economical solution for demanding biogas and agricultural operations.

Implementation:
Based on the positive experience that Uwe Sennert and many other biogas plant installers have had with HOMA pump in silage leachate applications over the past 20 years, Meyer also relies on the robust stainless steel pumps of the HOMA CTP series. The HOMA stainless steel pumps of the CTP series are not only made of durable cast stainless steel but are also available on short lead times, guaranteeing operators safe and low-maintenance operation of their systems.

Conclusion:
This project demonstrates how HOMA, with its high-quality stainless steel pumps, provides reliable technology for the agricultural and biogas industries – even under extreme conditions.
