Abrasion
Mechanical wear of a pump by solids
The most frequent reason for abrasion in wastewater and stormwater is sand. In submersible pumps, the impeller and wear plate, which are the components subject to the most stress, can be made of durable chrome hard cast iron, which withstands even abrasive substances in the pumped medium.
As an alternative protection of the impeller and volute an epoxy-ceramic compound can be applied onto the cast iron in order to reduce the wear and tear of the material.
